Once in a blue super blood moon, a blogger comes along and from the first time you see them on video, you want them to move into your house and be your best friend. For me, that moment came this year when “meeting” delightful wish-she-would-adopt me mama Tonya Payne of Hey Tonya, whose YouTube tutorial documenting her complete overhaul of a tiny rental laundry room using only dollar store products is going viral. Because it’s genius — and she’s just plain adorable.
Like me, Payne has one of those hallway laundry rooms that are literally just a double-wide closet and are always a hot mess of detergents, dryer sheets, cleaning supplies, and all those paper products. But unlike me — who owns her home, yipes, with all the DIY privilege that entails — Payne made all this magic happen in a rental. (I’m out of excuses…especially since I already diagrammed out an IKEA hack plan but haven’t implemented it. But I digress.)
Here’s the magical 11-minute tutorial from the companion YouTube to Payne’s blog, Hey Tonya. Like the rest of you, I’m sure, I may be headed to the dollar section now instead.
Here are some of the tips that Payne shared in her video, above:
Keep it color coordinated
Use a single color for a cohesive look. (Payne uses all white.)
Keep it secure
Use hook-and-loop (generic Velcro) tape on stacking baskets or bins to secure them when pulling them down or moving them and keep them from falling on you.
Organize wisely — and ergonomically
Use the top baskets for all those specialty cleaners and spray bottles that are too tall, but that you only use every so often.
Make it work with those wire shelves
Utilize the edges of wire shelving to hang handled baskets with S hooks.
Personalize the space into a place you actually wantto spend time
Decorate and make it fun with inexpensive decals, and hang stain removal and other cleaning tips (like this free download & print chartavailable on Payne’s blog, Hey Tonya) on the inside of the laundry room doors, along with a small whiteboard.
Utilize every inch of wall space
Use hooks to hang brooms and other cleaning tools out of the way, and use L-brackets to hang extra hangers — tied with a bit of raffia or ribbon at the end so the hangers don’t slip off.
Use a decorative tray with pretty bottles & jars for everyday items
Put a decorative tray down on top of the dryer (or folding top) for decorative bottles with cleaning additives like white vinegar (or other DIY cleansers) and decorative jars (for Tide pods or Borax) along with a little jewelry dish for clothes pins, safety pins, and other tiny supplies. Because, well, it just makes laundry more fun — and keeps everyday needs close at hand.
Don’t forget the vertical space
Hang shoe organizers inside the other closet door for everyday cleaning supplies.
“This turned out to be the little space that could,” Payne elates at the end of the video, and it really is working overtime — seamlessly.
